MEDICAL ONCOLOGY: The Medical Oncology department is backed by qualified and experienced medical oncologists and trained resident doctors and nursing staffs in field of medical oncology. Onco daycare at Balco Medical Centre is the largest day care in a private facility in Chhattisgarh with 26 beds.

The Department of Medical Oncology offers diagnostics and treatment of most types of cancer, development and implementation of preventive measures programs, and the possibilities of clinical research. It deals with the medicinal part of oncology (except surgery / radiation – rest all are dealt here, all aspects of cancer such as Curative, Palliative, & Supportive treatment).

Treatment plans and observations of patients diagnosed with cancer are developed considering the interdisciplinary approach, and in close cooperation with the departments of oncosurgery, radiology, oncopathology, nuclear medicine, therapy, and radiation oncology.

Under the guidance of medical specialists, a team of specialized oncospecialist nurses, experienced in meeting the psychological and physical needs of cancer patients, conducts chemotherapy and provides care for cancer patients.

The department offers comprehensive medical oncology services including Chemotherapy, Hormone therapy, Targeted & Biological therapy and Immunotherapy. For some types of tumours (e.g. Blood cancer, advance stage solid cancer), chemotherapy is the only possible method of treatment. Some cancers require simultaneous or sequential use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy while others may require chemotherapy sessions before and after surgery.

The duration of the course of treatment, as well as the frequency of its use, is determined by a chemotherapy program, individually designed taking into account the patient’s conditions (age, height, weight, BMI, BSA, CBC, Kidney and Liver status, stage and type of cancer).

The Department of Surgical Oncology offers clinical evaluation and diagnostic work-up including biopsies for various types of cancer, treatment planning and surgery to remove the cancer tissues. Surgical oncologists also perform palliative and emergency surgeries and surgeries to stage the disease in certain circumstances. The department boasts of performing complex Head and Neck surgeries for advanced cancers. It has performed the largest number of microvascular reconstructions in Chhattisgarh with highest success rate. The department of surgical oncology at Balco Medical Centre has been credited with many firsts in Chhattisgarh like Supermicrosurgery in Breast Reconstruction, Femur reconstruction with vascularised fibula bone and extracorporeal irradiation of femur autograft, limb preservation in sarcomas, and virtual surgical planning and CAD-CAM based 3D printing. PAIN & PALLIATIVE CARE: At Balco Medical Centre, our palliative care experts look after both acute pain management and chronic cancer pain in OPD, IPD and Emergency. The acute pain service looks after post-operative pain after major surgeries and all other acute and acute on chronic pain conditions. NUCLEAR MEDICINE:

Nuclear medicine is a multidisciplinary field that develops and uses instrumentation and tracers (radiopharmaceuticals) to study physiological processes and noninvasively diagnose, stage, and treat diseases. Particularly, it offers a unique means to study cancer biology in vivo and to optimize cancer therapy for individual patients. Nuclear medicine imaging, including single-photon emission computer tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET-CT), can provide important functional information and quantitative about normal tissues or disease conditions, in contrast to conventional, anatomical imaging techniques.

The role of nuclear medicine in cancer therapy involves use of tumor-targeting agents, conjugated with therapeutic radionuclides, used to deposit lethal radiation at tumor & metastatic sites.

The Nuclear Medicine department is backed by highly trained and experienced Nuclear Medicine Physicians and Physicist/RSO specialised in the field of Nuclear Medicine. It is equipped with 68Ga generator that helps in-house radiopharmaceutical formulation of 68Ga-PSMA/DOTA. The department has successfully started 177-Lu PSMA Therapy for the first time in Central India.

ANESTHESIA & INTENSIVE CARE

The Department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care in Balco Medical Centre, Naya Raipur provides multidisciplinary services to the patients by our excellent team of specialists. This is an integrated service department which provides the best possible care with the help of modern and efficient techniques, skills and knowledge to ensure complete patient safety, comfort and satisfaction in perioperative & pain management along with critical care. During the COVID pandemic, the critically ill patients were efficiently managed by the department.

Intensive Care Unit

Balco Medical Centre’s 35-bedded ICU is well-equipped with modern ventilators, High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), multiparameter monitors, ultrasonography and echocardiography machine. The department serves critically-ill surgical patients, patients with acute medical illness, co-morbid conditions and patients with haematological malignancies, neutropenia and chemotherapy-related complications in SICU, MICU and isolation. These patients have complex problems like Sepsis, Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure, many having acute haemodynamic, respiratory and metabolic derangements. The department is equipped with super isolation rooms for providing better supportive care and management for the vulnerable patients.

The unit is having well-trained intensivists and nursing staffs to provide the entire range of intensive care services including airway management, mechanical ventilation, circulatory support including advanced haemodynamic monitoring, enteral /parenteral nutrition, blood component therapy, sedation, pain relief and other supportive measures.

The ICU has several quality assurance programmes and various protocols have been implemented to evaluate and improve the quality of care in the ICU.

Anaesthesia & Perioperative Care

The Anaesthesia service is involved with the peri-operative management of patients undergoing cancer surgery in the modular operation theatre complex for routine and emergency procedures, as well as in peripheral areas including emergency, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, endoscopy and radiology.

Our modular OT complex consists of 5 operating rooms, equipped with modern machines and equipment like Workstations, Fibreoptic bronchoscope and CMAC (Videolaryngoscope) for managing difficult Airways, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy.

The anaesthetic management of patients undergoing extensive cancer surgery offers challenging problems including the management of difficult airway, acute haemorrhage, massive blood transfusion, anaesthesia for emergency surgery in patients with severe sepsis and haemorrhage. Our qualified and skilled anaesthetists administer anaesthesia to these patients with monitored anaesthesia care, performing invasive procedures and haemodynamic monitoring.

Post-op Recovery

All patients after major or minor surgical procedures are shifted to the recovery room for observation before being transferred to the ward. During this period they are monitored by a team of anaesthetists and nurses, who perform an initial post-operative evaluation, pain management, manage any acute post-operative event and also decide when the patient is ready for transfer.

Pre-operative Clinic

Balco Medical Centre has designated PAC clinic to conduct pre-operative anaesthetic evaluation of patients planned for surgery. A team of anaesthetists evaluate the patient's medical condition and formulate an anaesthetic plan, taking into account the patient's physical condition. This is then discussed with the patient, including the risks involved and details of any procedures likely to be performed in the peri-operative period.

Emergency Care

LABORATORY MEDICINE:

Laboratory services at Balco Medical Centre constitutes of two sub-departments, Department of Oncopathology and Department of Microbiology.

Department of Oncopathology

Early and accurate diagnosis is key to the accurate and effective treatment of cancer and oncopathology services provide the diagnostic backbone for oncologists. The department has in- house advanced pathology services including surgical pathology, frozen section, immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, hematopathology, flow cytometry, and clinical biochemistry.

1. Histopathology- Histopathology has a central role in cancer care and pathologist helps in diagnosis of the cancer by studying the tissue, describe various parameters in reports such as grade, margin status etc. to determine the prognosis, provides the final staging of the cancer and also evaluate the response to therapy which help clinicians decide the treatment protocol.
   
2. Immunohistochemistry (IHC)- Different cancer types have different treatment protocols. IHC is used for exact categorisation of the tumour (carcinoma/lymphoma/ sarcoma), to evaluate prognosis and behaviour of disease as well as in guiding the treatment (ER, PR, HER-2 neu, ALK, MSI, etc.). We are first private hospital in CG state to start in-house immunohistochemistry test with approx. 130 antibodies on board.
3. Frozen section help surgeons for Rapid Intra- Op diagnosis and margin assessment.
4. Cytopathology section deals with FNAC, fluid cytology, cell block preparation, PAP smears and rapid onsite adequacy checking in image-guided biopsy/ FNAC.
5. Hematology section deals with routine blood counts, peripheral smear examination, coagulation profile and clinical pathology. We have first in- house flow cytometry for diagnosis of leukaemia and CD34 stem cell enumeration. The department is planning to start MRD panels in near future.
6. Biochemistry- We have a dry chemistry platform for analysis of routine biochemistry parameters and we are also performing tumour marker assays to help clinicians.

Dental Services

The dental department at Balco Medical Centre goes beyond the scope of general dental treatment to include management of the mouth’s soft tissues and care for treatment side effects specific to oral cavity. Our trained and experienced dentist plays a vital role throughout cancer treatment by preventing and managing mouth sores, dental needs, oral pain and infections. For head and neck cancer patients and those on medication for bone damage, continuing dental care is very crucial.

Balco Medical Centre offers rehabilitation services, which includes a wide variety of therapies that are designed with the goal of helping patients to build strength, reduce stress, increase endurance, regain independence and sustain the energy needed to continue treatment and participate in daily activities.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists at Balco Medical Centre help with regaining movement and avoiding complications after cancer surgeries. They play a key role in assessing and rehabilitating balance, co-ordination, strength and mobility in patients whose cancer affects their nervous system. Physiotherapists teach and assist patients treated for various cancers like breast, prostate and haematological cancer to perform various exercises that improves mobility, fitness, muscular strength, and quality of life. They also consult to minimise the risk of developing lymphoedema, and, offer lymphoedema management.

Speech & Swallowing Therapy

Patients undergoing treatment for Head & Neck cancer experience trouble in both speech and swallowing, which in turn affect the patient's quality of life and ability to survive in the society. At Balco Medical Centre, we offer speech and swallowing therapy during the first 3 months post-treatment to get maximum benefits like understandability of speech, as judged by naive listeners, percent accuracy of production of consonant sounds and oropharyngeal swallow efficiency on liquid and paste.

Paediatrics

Paediatric Oncology

At Balco Medical Centre (BMC), we have dedicated Paediatric Oncology Department. There is a dedicated 8-bedded paediatric ward along with day care department. BMC offers comprehensive care for children from 0- 14 years of age. The team consists of Paediatric oncologist along with Onco-surgeons, Radiation oncologist and Nutritionist.

Currently, BMC provides quality treatment to children with excellent survival rates exceeding 80% in most cases. BMC is the referral hospital for whole of Chhattisgarh along with adjoining Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, catering to all types and haematological and solid organ malignancies in children. BMC offers long-term follow-up clinics post-completion of treatment to monitor the side-effects and complications of treatment, if any.

Balco Medical Centre has a separate paediatric ward for paediatric patients along with play area and Paediatric trained nurses. BMC has an advanced lab and radiology department for conducting all investigations under one roof. BMC offers treatment of all childhood cancers including:

General Ward



The general ward is a spacious, air-conditioned, multi-bed ward consisting of 44 beds. Steps are taken to maintain patient privacy while allowing patients to benefit from more affordable tariffs and still making available all other essential amenities such as common waiting area separate for male and female attendants, television, and individual side lockers and bedside visitor’s chairs, etc.


Twin Sharing Room



In twin sharing rooms, both the beds are partitioned with a curtain to maintain patient privacy. The twin room is equipped with a television and basic amenities for each patient. An attendant couch with storage is also provided for each patient.


Private Ward



Private rooms are designed to meet all the basic requirements for a single patient with accommodation for one attendant with attached bathing facilities. These rooms provide ample space for both the patient and the attendant and are designed with large windows for natural light. Private rooms are equipped with television and an attendant couch with storage.


Super Deluxe Rooms



Deluxe room is designed to give ample space for mobility to the patient and accommodation for one attendant with attached bathing facilities. The ambience of the room is enhanced by the windows that allow abundant natural light and picturesque view. To make you feel comfortable, our deluxe rooms are additionally equipped with a comfortable sofa, mini refrigerator, cupboard, dressing table, kettle, extra storage cabinet, and a centre table.


Suite Rooms



Suite accommodation is designed to meet the privacy of patient and their attendants. This room type is a luxury room set with wooden finish that includes facilities like a comfortable sofa, mini refrigerator, cupboard, dressing table, kettle, television, telephone, extra air conditioner, storage cabinet, designer hanging pendant lights and a centre table. Additionally, laundry services and in-room meals and snacks for one attendant are included in the room facilities.
