It refers to removal of Parotid, a salivary gland near the ear, which may have to be done in conditions like tumor, cyst, etc.The procedure is done under general anaesthesia. Depending on the type and location of the tumor, it could be superficial (removal of only superficial lobe) or total parotidectomy (removal of both superficial and deep lobes). An incision is made near the jaw line in front/back of the ear.Due to proximity to facial nerve, surgeon has to be careful to avoid damage to it. It takes 3-5 hours to complete the surgery. A drain is often placed in the wound to remove any residual blood or other fluid from the area of the operation. The drain is removed after 2-4 days.
